Doomsday

Stolen Words v8

The idiot bird leaps out and drunken leans
Atop the broken universal clock:
The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.
Out painted stages fall apart by scenes
While all the actors halt in mortal shock:
The idiot bird leaps out and drunken leans.
Streets crack through in havoc-split ravines
As the doomstruck city crumbles block by block:
The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.
Fractured glass flies down in smithereens;
Our lucky relics have been put in hock:
The idiot bird leaps out and drunken leans.
The monkey's wrench has blasted all machines;
We never thought to hear the holy cock:
The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.
Too late to ask if end was worth the means,
Too late to calculate the toppling stock:
The idiot bird leaps out and drunken leans,
The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.

THE ONLY RISK IS THAT OF OPENNESS
KIRI DALENA + CON CABRERA

November 25 – 30, 2010
STUDIO HOURS:  2pm – 6pm

November 30, 2010, Tuesday
CLOSING RECEPTION, 6pm – 10pm

Green Papaya Art Projects
41B T. Gener (corner Kamuning Rd.), Quezon City

“The only risk is that of openness” is the third on-site project of "Ephemera of Disposable Goods" an ongoing project based on temporal collaborations at green papaya art projects .  Kiri Dalena and Con Cabrera instigates a dialogue with concepts and materials used on public uprisings.  Both artists isolate these concepts from the street and brings them indoors to investigate.

Kiri Dalena is a visual artist and a filmmaker, she is a graduate of the University of the Philippines Los Banos and studied 16 mm filmmaking at the Mowelfund Film Institute. She has held solo exhibitions and participated in group shows in the last few years. She was born and raised in Quezon City. Kiri is a recepient of the 2009 Ateneo Art awards.

Con Cabrera, born and raised in Sasmuan, Pampanga is a graduate of Advertising Arts in University of Santo Tomas. She currently lives in Quezon City while working for a magazine publishing company and teaching part-time in Kalayaan College. She's a member of the artist alliance Artists' ARREST (Artists Response to the Call for Social Change and Transformation) since 2005. For the past five years, she has participated in a number of group exhibitions in the Manila and co-curated an exhibit of digital works in San Francisco and Oakland, CA.

The Ephemera of Disposable Goods, program of current curator-in-resident Lian Ladia, aims to  present a series of collaborations between two artists of similar or dissimilar genres investigating social sculptural projects based on context of time/place, relational works and encounters.  Green Papaya’s space will become an open studio facility where artists and public can engage in discussions and debates as the artists go through their process of constructions and deconstructions every session.

I feared for these days to come. To be able to have a show with Kiri, someone I look up to, and in the gallery where I most feel out of place. Excitement and fear. Happiness and fear. Fulfillment and fear. Everything comes with fear. I delayed my schedule of working on the artwork for the exhibit because I am too afraid to start and fail. I'm such a pessimist, it's killing me. Boo. Argh!

Dear universe, please be kind to me 'til the 30th?
You can start sending me storms (again) after the show. Amen.

Open Letter to my FA31A Class

Hey class.

I received my last salary from KC yesterday. This means the sem is really over. (insert sad face here) I hope you're happy with your grades. Though this won't be my last email (I'll occasionally post art events), please allow me to be (a little) dramatic. Thanks for being good students. You were my first college teaching class and I'm thankful because you were a fun bunch. I'm not sure if I taught you enough, but I do hope you enjoyed the subject. I hope I taught you useful graphic skills. I hope you enjoyed watching Beautiful Losers and Helvetica. I hope you learned something from our guests Meneer, Zeus and Eduard. I hope you'll eventually love the Pen Tool and discover the things it could do. I hope you abandon the use of MS Paint forever. Seriously.

During our first sessions, I kept on thinking that I can't do this, I'll give myself just one sem. But I can change my mind, right? So see you around Kalay kids. Approach me for anything.
(Except maybe for drugs. I don't want to be fired.) :)

"Tell me how could you say such a thing,"

(Stolen Words V3)
she said, staring at the ground beneath her feet. "You're not telling me anything I don't know already. 'Relax your body, and the rest of you will lighten up.' What's the point of saying that to me? If I relaxed for a second, I'd never find my way back.

I'd go to pieces, and the pieces

would

be

blown
away.

Why can't you see that? How can you talk about watching over me if you can't see that?"

I said nothing.

...

"I want you always to remember me, will you remember that I existed,
and that I stood next to you here like this?"

"Always," I said. "I'll always remember."

"We bruise easily now
and the wind rubs us raw,

but we need to live on the edge of our skin like this,

Ang Pagpanaw ay Di Paglisan

Hindi Namin Ipangangakong Kami'y Magbabalik
Alexander Martin Remollino

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.
